..... The federal immigration agents involved in the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis have been placed on administrative leave, multiple news outlets reported.
.....
The move to put the Department of Homeland Security agents involved in the shooting on leave was reported by MS Now and The New York Times, which cited anonymous sources. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediate respond to USA Today's request for comment.
..... An early government investigation obtained by USA today of the fatal shooting found a U's. customs officer and a Border Protection officer fired their guns during the fatal encounter.
..... The probe by CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility notes that the agency members began firing about five seconds after an agent yelled "he's got a gun" multiple times. The DHS report does not say whether the bullets form both agency members hit Pretti.
..... Border Protection's preliminary findings were based on body-worn camera footage and agency documentations, according to the report.
..... White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said the administration is reviewing whether CBP operated outside of tis protocol in Minnesota.
..... The White House "provided clear guidance to DHS that the extra personnel that had been sent to Minnesota for force protection should be sued for conducting fugitive operations to cerate a physical barrier between the arrest teams and the disruptor," said the statement sent to multiple news outlets and first reported by CNN. "we are evaluating why the CBP team may not have been following that protocol."
.....
Miller's statement comes as the adviser faces intense scrutiny for immediately labeling Pretti a "terrorist" after he was shot dead by federal agents in Minneapolis. Following outrage over Pretti's death and the administration's description of what happens,, Trump reshuffled leadership in Minnesota, replacing Border patrol commander Gregory Bovino with border czar Tom Homan.
Placing blame for Noem comments
..... Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has blamed Border Patrol for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's remarks after the shooting in which she called Pretti a "domestic terrorist" and falsely said Pretti had brandished a firearm.
..... "Initial statement were made after reports from CBP on the ground. It was a very chaotic scene," Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in an appearance on Fox Business, adding, "that is why this investigation is so important so that we can get accurate facts to the American people."
..... The administration has also repeatedly suggested the shooting was justified because Preitti was carrying a gun, drawing ire from gun right's groups.
..... Video of the shooting shows that Pretti, holding a cell phone, intervened after a federal agent shoved a woman and did not appear to brandish his gun, which was removed form him by an agent before Pretti was shot multiple times.
Representative Ilhan Omar attacked
..... Trump has said he will "de-esclate" immigration operations in Minnesota, but tensions remain high after a man attracted Representative Ilhan Omar with an unknown substance and Trump warned that Minneapolis' mayor was "playing with fire."
.....
Omar, a frequent Trump target, was speaking at a town hall event late January 27 [2026] in Minneapolis when a man, later identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, sprayed her with an unknown substance. Kazmierczak was arrested, and the attack is being investigated by the Minneapolis Police Department and U.S. Secret Service. Omar was unharmed.
..... Afterward, Omar put out a statement saying she will not be intimidated by "this small agitator."
..... Trump told ABC News, without any supporting evidence, that Omar "probably had herself sprayed." At the time of the attack, Omar was calling for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be impeached after federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on January 24. [2026]
..... Pretti's killing - and the administration;s reaction to it - sparked friction in the Republican Party, with calls for Noem to be fired, and has raised the threat of a partial government shutdown.
Fray responds to Trump's warning
..... Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey responded to Trump's earlier statement that said Frey was "playing with fire" after the mayor vowed not to enforce federal immigration laws.
..... "The job of our police is to keep people safe, not enforce fed immigration laws," Frey said on X. "I want them preventing homicides, not hunting down a working dad who contributes to MPLS & is from Ecuador. It's similar to the policy your guy Rudy had in NYC. Everyone should feel safe calling 911."
..... Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on January 27 [2026] met with Homan. Each of the officials said the meetings were productive and that they would continue holding talks over the coming days.
