Attorney general releases report on law enforcement officers' discipline

..... After issuing directives aimed at promoting law enforcement transparency, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General released its report compiling the number of major disciplines reported by departments statewide.

The report includes disciplines from agencies of all kinds, including county and local departments, between June 2020 and December 2022, beginning after a directive was issued requiring every law enforcement agency inn the state to submit annual report. Major disciplines are defined as terminations, reductions in rank or suspension of more than five days.
..... Over the 2 1/2 year period, there were 1,014 total major disciplines reported to the Attorney General's Office, with 877 officers receiving discipline. A total of 531 agencies submitted their reports, with 232 of them reporting at least one major discipline.
..... The report found that 212 officers were terminated, 818 suspended and 32 demoted. Some officers received multiple types of discipline. the average length of suspension was nearly 38 major discipline than in the previous year.
..... In 2022, 301 officers were suspended and 69 were terminated, compared with 278 and 62 in 2021.
..... The agency with by far the most disciplines was the state Department of Corrections, with 173 issued over the relevant time period. Camden County Corrections was second with 69, followed by the state police with 52. The municipal police department with the highest number was Newark, which issued 52 major disciplines.

County corrections departments piled up near the top of the list, with five counties represented in the top 10 agencies with the most major disciplines.
