..... Have you ever had to fax a request for your health care records? or had to bring paper copies or CDs of a health record from one doctor to another doctor?
..... Or maybe you have found your health information stored in multiple Online portals that are incompatible. As a patient, you have the right to access all your health records electronically, and your provider have to give them to you: That part of the federal 21st Century Cares Act became active on October 6, 2022.
..... Bo Holland experience what it's like to have health care records in multiple places and not have systems talk to one another when his son was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor at age 19 in 2013. suddenly, his family was thrust into trying to navigate cancer treatment at two Texas facilities, with rare treatments that were hard to understand, not knowing if the family was making the right decision.
..... Using his family's experience and his knowledge of banking information technology, Holland and his company AllClear ID have cerated an information platform that brings all of a patient;s electric records into one app called Health Bank One.
..... The app was launched last month [10/2024] and is on Google Play and the App Store for $14.99 a month.
..... However, Holland thinks that as more providers have patients who are using it and as providers want to have better access to a patient's medical history, hospitals and clinics might make paying for their patients; app part of their cost of doing business, much as providing a portal is the current practice.
..... Employers also might provide it to employees as they provide blood pressure and diabetes management programs.
..... With Health Bank One, Holland is using the same technology he sued to make banks in Europe share information. The health data shared by multiple providers and sites are kept secure, much like banking transactions.
..... Health Bank One can pull information from every provider that has a number known as a National Provider Identifier, or NPL, which is required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Doctors, clinics, hospitals and nursing homes all have an NPI number.
..... In the Health Bank One app, patients select which provider records they want. The app then pulls those records, even if they are not electronic. For the records that are not in the new standard digital download from, Health Bank One will turn it into digital data within six days.
..... Currently, Holland said, "data is scattered all over the place. Patients and clinicians pay the price."
..... With the app, "you are creating your own network with whoever you want to," Holland said.
..... Using artificial intelligence, Health Bank One then creates a summary of the records. That summary makes it easy for patients and providers to read records quickly without having to thumb through the care Guide feature of the app, patients can use ChatGPT AI to ask medical questions about their health records.
..... Holland gives the example of asking in the Care Guide, "How are my lipids doing?" the app will then compare previous blood test results to tell you how much your lipdis have improved or worsened and what those results mean. It can even create a chart for you.
..... The data and the answers are owned by the patient and only shared with providers the patient selects.
..... Of course, Health Bank One caries the caveat that you about talk to your doctor for the most accurate information, but Holland said his company did test the answers the AI gave to the 500 people in the beta testing group and found it to be extremely accurate.
..... Dapni Eissing was one of the test users for Health Bank One. She manages the care of her son Connor, 13, who was born with a rare brain condition.
..... "Back in my day, my resource was moms of other families dealing with this," Eissing said.
..... Now, she's able to ask the care Guide her questions. She's also able to access her son's medication and a summary poof her son;s history.
..... "Having everything in one place is going to be lifesaving," she said.
..... Daniel Stromberg, a cardiologist at Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin, sees the technology as "simplifying a lot of work we put into understanding what is happening with the patient and making sure we have complete information," he said. "It brings all of this information together."
..... He also sees an advantage when it comes to doing clinical research. Using the provider version of the app, he can narrow down patients that meet certain criteria for an upcoming study by using the AI to look through the records of the patient who have agreed for him to have access to their records.
..... "All of a sudden, you have a lot more information for a registry," he said.
..... Overall, Holland is hopeful the app will help reduce the burdens on families and doctors that he experience when his son Ford was diagnosed.
..... It really changes the communications (between) you and your doctors," he said.
..... Ford Holland, who is now 29, is a 10-year cancer survivor with a master's degree in biostatistics. he now works alongside his dad at AllClear ID.
