WAYNE - the public library is offering a curbside program for patrons to borrow books and bring them back before the building reopens.
.....
Those services also will ensure staff is not slammed by months of demand on the day that finally happens, said Ricardo Pino, the library director.
..... Wayne was ahead of the state, as Governor Phil Murphy didn't alter the March 21 [2020] order that shuttered libraries until Friday [06/12/2020] during his daily briefing. Murphy said libraries may allow curbside pickup and dropoff beginning Monday June 22. [2020]
..... Teh March 21 [2020] order also closed barbershops and nail salons, which can reopen on June 22. [2020]
..... Some libraries are making do by having staff fulfill orders at the curb, and it has paid off in Wayne.
.....
"Our circulation desk almost felt like Grand Central Station because there were so many people calling in," Pino said of the first day that the services were in place.
..... Of the library's 173,000 holdings, 7.5% were in borrowers' hands before the services started. About 350 items were reserved for pickup on the first day, Pinto said.
..... The Valley Road library is part of a consortium of 21 libraries, called PALS Plus. Two other libraries in the co-op - Little Falls and North Haledon -are providing curbside drop-off and pickup.
..... The Wayne library's pickup service allows patrons to check out up to 15 items at a time.
..... Patrons place orders thought an online catalog, or by calling the library's circulation desk. When the items are ready for pickup, a staffer calls to arrange a time to meet in the parking lot. No physical contact is made. The patron shows his or her library care by pressing it against the car window, and the staffer loads the items in the trunk.
.... Pino said items dropped off by patrons are being quarantined for a week under an ultraviolet lamp in the library's garage to kill possible germs on their surfaces.
