Dog treats recalled over salmonella concerns

..... Dog treats sold in 19 states from two companies are being recalled due to potential salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
..... Carolina Prime Pet Incorporated of Lenoir, North Carolina, initiated a recall of 400 16-ounce bags of "Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips: treats for canines the FDA announced November 23. [2024]
..... As of the date of the recall, no illnesses had been reported.
..... The product comes in a 16-ounce purple-and-back bag marked on the back side with lot number 20051324L2. It expiated date ins November 13, 2025.
..... The treats were available for purchase through the company's Online retail platform at www.hollywoodfeed.com and also sold at retailers in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
..... The FDA also announced that Gaines Pet Treat LLC, of Birmingham, Alabama, is voluntarily recall 204, 5-ounce bags of "Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips" treats for the same reason.
..... The product comes in a 5-ounce bag with lot number 20061124/ It expire on date is December 11, 2025.
..... The recalled "Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chip's" were also distributed through Online retailers and to pet retailers in the following states: Alabama, Florida and Georgia.
..... As of November 22, [2024] no illnesses in pets have been reported.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and fatal infections in children, the elderly, pregnant women and other people with weakened immune systems. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever 12-72 hours after eating a contaminated product.
..... Pet food can sometimes be the source of salmonella infection. If people handed contaminate pet food or contaminated utensil and then though their mouth, they can accidentally ingest the bacteria. The infection is not common in dogs and cats, but they can carry the bacteria.
..... According to the FDA, signs of salmonellae in dogs and cats include:
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea (some with blood in it)
* Decrease activity levels
* Fever
* Loss of appetite
..... Even if a dog or cat does not have symptoms, according to the FDA, the pet can still spread the bacteria to humans and other pets.
..... Consumers who have purchased either of the affected dog treats should throw them away.
