Elderly man hit by home improvement scam, suspect charged

..... A New York man is facing charges after allegedly scamming a Passaic County resident out of more than $400,000, authorities said.

Abba Cohen, 42, of Flushing, was arrested Tuesday [10/15/2024] after an investigation by the financial crimes unit of the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. He was charged with money laundering, conspiracy to commit theft by deception and receiving stolen property, all second-degree offenses.
..... On April 25, [2024] the Prosecutor's Office received a report that Cohen allegedly had deposited about $432,000 in stolen funds into his account.
..... He received the money as payment for a home improvement scam in which he targeted an elderly Woodland Park resident, said a press release from the office.
..... Cohen was arrested without incident and was set to be released on pretrial monitoring after a court appearance Wednesday [10/16/2024] afternoon.
..... He is facing the possibility of five to 10 years in prison on each of the three charges if convicted.
