Francesca's fashion chain is latest to declare bankruptcy

..... Francesca's a women's boutique mall retailer with 17 locations in New Jersey, filed for bankruptcy on Monday, February 9, [2026] with plans to close all of tis stores after 25 years in operations.

As part of the bankruptcy, Francesca's will offer steep discounts of 25% to 40%, the chain announced, including on sweaters and cardigans; blouses, skirts and lounge-wear; denim jackets and shirts; dresses; jewelry; and rompers and jumpsuits.
..... This bankruptcy is the latest to befall retailers in New Jersey since the COVID-19 pandemic, which upended global supply chains and triggered 40-year-hihg inflation.
..... There were 785 bankruptcy in 2025, the third consecutive year that the number of bankruptcies rose, data by the Wall Street rating agency S&P Global showed.

The number of bankruptcies in 2025 was the highest since the 828 in 2010, when the nation was reeling form the fallout of the Great recession two years earlier, S&P reported.
..... On 2021, Francesca's was acquired by TerraMAr Capital and Tiger Capital for $18 million,
after a first Chapter 11 restructuring that saw the chain close 200 of its stores.

"The business quickly returned to profitability in 2021 and 2022, with revenue returning to 2016 levels, and average store sales expanding by 27% or more from 2019 to 2022," said court documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy court for the District of New Jersey.
..... "Unfortunately, a January 31, 2023, data breach shut down the company's system and materially disrupted the company's operations, resulting in an impact on sales ... due to inventory and pricing systems paralysis," the documents said.
..... Despite cost-cutting efforts, the court documents said, Francesca's struggled with its supply chain and "ability to access merchandise" from its outside suppliers.
..... In December 2025, Francesca's failed to secure desperately needed outside financing, the documents said.
..... "Even before its previous pandemic bankruptcy filing Francesca's was losing ground with audiences, especially teen girls," Neil Saunders, a retail analyst and managing director of GlobalData, a market intelligence and analytics company, said in an email.
..... "There was a small rally after bankruptcy, but it was insufficient to revive the chain," he said. "The core issue is that Francesca's has not inserted itself into the culture or lives of younger consumers to maintain relevance."
What is a bankruptcy?
