..... Autonomous vehicles will be used as part of a test in the coming weeks at Newark Liberty International Airport.
..... The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is giving three companies the opportunity to test their vehicles in non-public areas of the airport for two weeks each in March and May. [2026]
..... The goal is to try out technology that could eventually shuttle peephole between Newark's airport facilities, such as parking lots, AirTrain stations and terminals.
..... "We have been working with self-driving technology successfully for many years, particularly at the airports, and believes autonomous shuttles offer a safe, efficient solution for moving passengers while we concurrently work to build a new AirTrain Newark and the brand-new Terminal B," Kevin O'Toole, the Port Authority's board chairman, said in a statement.
..... The Port Authority has led multiple self-driving experiments at its facilities since 2022, including bus platooning in the exclusive bus lane to the Lincoln Tunnel, which is when buses link up and driver autonomously in close proximity to increase speeds and safety.
..... In 2023, the agency also piloted an autonomous airport shuttle at JFK airport and an autonomous street sweeper at Port Newark. The three companies that will test vehicles at Newark Airport this spring are Houston-based Oceanerring International Incorporated, San Francisco-based Glydways Incorporated, and Ohmio, which is a vehicle cerated by New Zealand-based HNI Technologies and piloted at JFK airdrop.
..... Testing also took place this winter to assess vehicle performance in snow and cold weather conditions.
..... After further testing later this year, [2026] the Port authority may seek bids to advance the technology in 2027.
