WASHINGTON - The House of Representative on April 10, [2025] passed a bill aimed at preventing non-citizens from voting in federal election, which voting rights experts say would make voting harder for tens of millions of Americans.
..... The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which passed 220-208 mostly along party line,s would require people to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or a birth certificate, when reregistration to vote. It mirrors GOP voting concerns Persistent Donald Trump sought to address with an executive order in late March. [2025]
..... It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, and voters are required to attest to being a citizen when they register, but states deiced how to enforce the law. Several states require voters to provide a Social Security number, match voter rolls to federal data, or require identification at the polls.
..... Four Democrats joined with Republicans to advance the bill: Ed Case of Hawaii, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington.
..... To became law, the bill would still need to pass in the senate, where Republicans control the chamber 53-47. However, at least seven Democrats would need to join Republicans in approving the bill to overcome the chamber's 60-vote threshold.
