NY panel gifted NYC residents $50 admission

..... After the New York-New Jersey World Cup host committee gifted New York City residents with 1,000 tickets priced at $50 to the World Cup and snubbed New jersey, where eight of the matches are being played, Garden State leaders have some demands of their own.
..... Bergen County Executive James Tedesco on May22 [2026] sent a letter to Alex Lasry, the New York-New Jersey host committee CEO, requesting a similar "ticket access program" for county residents.
..... "Our residents will experience th day-to-day impacts of hosting this tournament more directly than perhaps any other community in the region," said Tedesco, who noted they will have to contend with increased traffic and provide many of the first responders, transit personnel and shoulder other responsibilities central to the tournament.
..... "Proving affordable ticket access would ensure that the people helping host the word are not priced out of participating in the event taking place in their own backyard, he said. Eight World Cup matches are scheduled for MetLife Stadium in June and July, [2026] including the final.
..... Republican Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, Gary Scharfenberge, Al Barlas and Michael Inganamort also sent a little May 22 [2026] to Lasry and Tammy Murphy, the committee's board and wife of ex-New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, calling for an accounting of how the host committee has spent the money provided by the state.
..... They assume Tammy Murphy would "place New Jersey's interests first," the letter said. "Unfortunately in light of this latest revelation we can no longer confidently say New Jersey taxpayer interest are being served, let alone protected."
..... The legislator requested answers about four concerns the called "deeply troubling." They are:
* A complete and itemized accounting of all expenditures, commitments and allocations of money provided to the host committee.
* Terms of the agreement under which the tickets were purchased and transferred to New York City.
* A description of an equivalent community access program being planed in New Jersey.
* Confirmation of whether an New Jersey state officials were consulted prior to the ticket arrangement with New York was authorized.
..... The assemblymen gave a deadline of June 6. [2026
..... "New Jersey was a signatory to the original bid documents submitted to FIFA," they wrote. "New Jersey's stadium is hosting the tournament, including the final match.
..... "New Jersey's taxpayers are carrying costs that remain inadequately explained and, in important respects, appear to have benefit residents of another state," they said. "The host committee's cooperation with legislative oversight is not optional at this stage. It is owed."

NJ has spent at least 4300 million to host World Cup

..... New Jersey has spent over 4300 million to support the World Cup planning and execution, with at least $50 million going directly to the host committee.
..... It's unclear whether New York has made comparable contribution to the host committee, but the most recent agreement signed by New York City, New Jersey will likely be no reimbursement.
..... That's why the news about the discounted tickets was so stining to New Jersey.

The New York-New Jersey host committee purchased, at full cost, 1,000 World Cup tickets and gave them to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is distributing them at 450 apiece through a lottery to New York City residents - an arrangement that received the blessing of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
..... The ticket will also include transportation to and from the matches being played at MetLife Stadium, the East Rutherford facility hat will be renamed New York-New Jersey Stadium for the duration of the World Cup.
..... There has been no public explanation about why New Jersey residents weren't included in this arrangement, which was overseen by a host committee partly representing of the Garden State.

Multiple issues between FIFA and NJ officials

..... New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill canceled the planned fan festival at Liberty State Park, which had numerous logistical challenges, and reallocated the state's contribution to smaller events throughout the state.
..... The host committee is now holding a"Jersey Fan Hub" at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, a series of watch parties changing a $10 entry fee. New York and he host committee organized watch parties in all five boroughs that will be free, in part thanks to $20 million from New York.
..... Sports Illustrated Stadium is the regular home for Gotham FC, the National Woman's Soccer League team owned by Tammy and Phil Murphy.
..... Sherrill also got into a war of words with FIFA over the cost of NJ Transit's ticket to the matches.

New York New Jersey Stadium - and now vice versa

..... But the good news is FIFA - at Sherrill's request - is allowing one of the two signs at MetLife Stadium to follow alphabetical order and order of priority for those west of the Hudson River.
..... One sign will now read: "We are New Jersey New York."
..... The other will be "We are New York New Jersey."
..... Sherrill applauded this brave baby step toward equality for the Garden State.
..... "I will always put New Jersey first, and I wanted to make suer the stadium hosting the World Cup matches in our state did the same," Sherrill said in a statement.
..... "We are thrilled to welcome soccer fans from around the world this summer, [2026] and this recognition helps ensure the experience is just as exciting and memorable for New Jerseyans as it is for our visitors."
