Sherrill cites benefits for business, soccer fans

..... Governor Mikie Sherrill isn't going to be the one to stop celebrations during the World Cup. On Monday, May 18, [2026] Sherrill issued a proclamation that will let New Jersey towns approve ordinances extending the hours alcohol can be sold during the sporting spectacle, which is set to kick-off on June 11. [2026]
..... The proclamation points to updated guidelines issued by the state's Division of alcoholic Beverage Control. The guidelines allow Gardner State communities to extend their hours for alcohol sales and also relax other policies for liquor licensee holders thorough special permits.
..... Eight of the tournament;s matches - including the final - will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford between June 12 and July 19. [2026]

"We're making it easier for residents and visitors to keep the energy going beyond the stadium, whether that's gathering with friends at local restaurants, cheering on matches at neighborhood bars or enjoying the excitement of our downtowns and communities. This is about creating memories that will last lifetime. bring people together and helping businesses across the state take part in this historic moment."
..... Since liquor licenses are issued by towns, the operating hours fall to the local government's discretion. Most bars and restaurants throughout the state have alcohol sales hours that end by 2 AM.
..... Sherrill isn't the only governor to allow for extended hours. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro singed a law allowing Philadelphia bars to stay open until 4 AM. for both World Cup and the sesquicentennial coming on July 4. [2026]
..... Missouri took it a step further, with Governor Mike Kehoe signing a law that would allow bars in Kansas City to serve alcohol for 23 hours - from 6:00 AM. to 5:00 AM.
..... New York is allowing one-day permits for businesses and event organizers to serve alcohol at fan festivals and public watch parties.
..... Governor Kathy Hochul also has called for legislation to extend bar hours, but nothing has made it to her desk yet.
