..... Certain New Jersey employers will have to include a salary range when posting a job starting next summer, [2025] under a bill Governor Phil Murphy signed into law Monday [11/18/2024] morning.
..... Senate Bill 2310 will require New Jersey businesses with 10 or more employees to include wage or salary information, or a compensation range , in a job posting, as well as a description of all job benefits, starting in June 2025.
..... New Jersey will follow in the footsteps of states such as Connecticut, which began the requirement in 2021, and New York, which started the requirement earlier this year [2024] after New York City began requiring it in 2022.
..... Jersey City in 2022 3enacted its own pay transparency ordinance, which applies to employers of at least five workers.
..... But some New York City employers have used loopholes in the pay requirement law. In some cases, they've included huge salary ranges as wide as $2 million, CNBC and Vice News reported.
..... "Job seekers should have a complete picture of salary and benefits before they apply for a position," said state Senator Paul Moriarty, D-Gloucester, the bill's sponsor. "why make people jump through hoops, only to find out at the end that they've not going to be paid what they think they deserve?"
..... Last month, [10/2024] Indeed Hiring Lab reported that nearly 58% of its job postings across the U.S. included at least "some" salary information. Roughly half of the job postings in New Jersey listed salary information, Indeed found.
..... Advocates say the measure evens the playing field for job seekers and can help close the wage gaps faced by women and minorities.
..... "Think of going to a grocery store - you don't have to negotiate with the checkout clerk. There's a clear price, and you pay the price," Christopher To, an assistant professor of human resources management at Rutgers university, said in a 2022 interview. "with pay transparency, companies are required to make the first offer, and employees can simply walk away if they don't like it.
..... "Will there still be salary negotiations? Sure," To said. "But you're reducing the 'how much do you want?' dance by making your information public."
