..... New Jersey motorists diagnosed on the autism spectrum will be able to note their condition on their driver's licenses, under a bill signed by Governor Phil Murphy that aims to reduce the likelihood of "dangerous misunderstanding with police.
..... The legislation, S761, allows people to indicate that they have a communication disorder on their licenses or government identification card.
..... "This law is a victory for people with autism and their families," Murphy said in a statement after he signed the bill into law Monday. [05/15/2023] "It will help to ensure that these individuals are treated with understanding and respect by law enforcement, and that their unique needs are net."
..... Autism advocates say some people on the spectrum may have a hard time communicating or following police directions amid the chaos, lights and noise during a traffic stop or in other interactions. A notation on an ID will help police better understand a driver's challenges, the governor;s office said.
..... Both police and the autism, community see the need. Suzanne Buchanan, executive director of the group Autism New Jersey, said last month [04/2023] when Morris County law enforcement agencies rolled out a similar program.
..... "Everyone's interested in keeping everyone as safe as possible," she said.
..... Those seeking the notation can submit documentation to the state Motor Vehicle Commission. Parents, guardians and caregivers can apply in behalf of someone else.
..... The bill requires the state human services commissioners and the attorney general to work with at least one disability advocacy group to develop guidance for law enforcement on how to effectively communicate with people who have these diagnoses.
..... "This is a positive step for New Jersey and will help to crate a more inclusive and understanding society," Buchanan said Wednesday. [05/17/2023] "We are grateful to Governor Murphy and the Legislature for enacting this legislation.
..... This bill was sponsored by state Senator Nellie Pou and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez as well as Senator Kritin Corrado and Assembly members Aura Dunn and Thomas Giblin.
