WASHINGTON - Lawmakers braced for another Senate vote attempting to end the government shutdown as the impact of funding drying up continued to ripple across the country from the standoff that began October 1. [2025]
..... But both sides have dug i for a longer impasse. Lawmakers still don't appear any closer to a compromise. Most Senate Democrats have blocked the House GOP funding bill that would reopen the government through November 21. [2025] They are aiming to first restore cuts to Medicaid and extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. Republicans said they can negotiate health care issues after the government reopens.
..... House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters October 13 [2025] the country is "barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history."
..... The longest shutdown lasted 35 days during Trump's first term and was largely related to disputes over a southern broader wall.
..... Johnson said that he spoke with the president "at length" and that the two remain united in their views about the shutdown. "He and I are both so frustrated," he said. The government shutdown has left high and dry the flood insurance program that millions of Americans rely on even as an October [2025] nor'easter pounded New England.
..... The Nation la Flood insurance Program covers 4.7 million policyholders in 23,000 communities for a total of $1.3 trillion in flood insurance, according to an analysis from the National Association of Realtors. It's a lifeline in high-risk areas where mortgage lenders require homeowners to have insurance against flood. Very few private homeowners' policies ofter that coverage.
..... The association reckons that nearly 1,400 real estate closings per day could be affected by the shutdown.
..... The Bureau of Labor Statistics said it has pushed back from October 15 to October 24 [2025] the publication of the September [2025] consumer Price Index and the 2026 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment.
..... Many of American's largest banks, including Chase, Citibank, Bank of American and USAA, are offering help to customers whose finance are in disarray because of the shutdown.
..... Flights are increasingly delayed due to air-traffic control staffing issues, including at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport. The Smithsonian;s National Zoo closed October 12, [2025] and its panda cam has gone off-line. The animals there will still be fed and cared for, zoo said.
..... The next Senate vote is planned for October 14, [2025] after the federal Columbus Day holiday.
..... The upper chamber has failed seven times to approve a House Republican bill to reopen the government until November 21. [2025] Three senators who caucus with Democrat joined Republicans to support the bill, but the 55-45 majority was short of the 60 votes needed.
..... Senator Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, continued to blame the shutdown on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York.
..... "Let's hope there are 5 more Democrats who will join us, because despite all of the good work we;re done, there's a lot more we could do if the Schumer Shutdown ends," Thune said on social media.
..... House Democrats planned to meet the evening of October 14 [2025] at the Capitol "to discuss the path forward" despite the chamber being out of session.
..... House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries D-New York, called the caucus meeting for 6 PM.
..... "It is critically important for House democrats to once again return to Washington to stand up for the healthcare of everyday Americans, pay our active duty troops and support hard working federal civil servant,s" he wrote in a letter October 11. [2025]
