Wayne says no to plan by motel on Route 46
It asked to cut security after drop in police calls

WAYNE - The township has denied an appeal by a local motel to relax its around-the-clock security, saying the private guards have helped reduce the need for law enforcement.

Between January and November of last year, [2025] the police department responded to 431 calls for service to Quality Inn. at 334 Route 46 east - one of four roadside lodges that officials cited for blatant health and safety violations. Since 24/7 security was implemented, there has been 64 police responses to the 140-room motel.
..... Private guards were in place after the motel owner sued the township for rejecting its license renewal in December. [2025] The security requirement was part of a deal they reached to allow the business to reopen. Conditions also included installation of tamper-proof cages around smoke alarms, a plan to rid the premises of cockroaches and the removal of live-in employees.

The agreement between the township and motel owner, a limited liability company called Skips Hospitality, stipulated that the entity could petition officials to cut back on the security hours at the end of July, [2026] which it did.
..... The Township council, however, discussed the issue in a closed session and, on September 2, [2026] passed a resolution to formally turn down that request.
..... If the council had agreed to it, the new security house would have been 10 PM. to 5 AM. on Sunday through Thursday, and 7PM. to 5 AM. on Friday and Saturday.
..... "Conditions imposed as part of the 2026 business license has had a significant improvement on the site's operation and a drastic reduction in the expenditure of township resources to the site," the resolution said.
