Wayne school board OKs AI policy, defining rules for district use

WAYNE - The school board has adopted a new policy that sets clear parameters for sue of generative AI in classrooms and on homework assignments.

The policy, approved by the Board of Edi cation on May 15, [2025] incorporates an 11-page plan with guidelines for how students should handle the technology and ideas for teachers to apply it to special education, STEM electives and other subjects. New jersey officials recognize artificial intelligence as a tool that could have a "transformation impact."
..... "Educators need to prepare students for changing workplaces," said the state Department of Education, and that includes "teaching them how to sue emerging technologies."
..... In January, [2025] the state awarded $1.5 million to 12 district to experiment with AI use. Among the grant recipients were the regional districts of Pascack Hills and Pascack Valley high schools, and West Morris Central and West Morris Mendham high schools.

..... It has a step-by-step process for teachers to observe if they suspect students misused AI, and it suggest quesitons htat they should ask to determine what resources were employed. Apropriate discipline will follow the policy states.

..... The policy states that the district will establish an "AI traffic light: model for teachers to tell students if the technology is allowed for a certain course or a specific assignment. Red means it is prohibited, while yellow and green mean it is permitted to varying degrees.
