Wayne school board cuts 111 positions under spending plan

WAYNE - More than 100 faculty positions including multiple roes in school administration, were abolished Thursday [05/01/2025] as the Board of Education adopted a $197.9 million budget next year. [20254-2026]

Among the axed jobs were five assistant principal positions and four director or supervisor positions based at the K-12 district office.
..... The 111 eliminations also include non-renewed contracts for an entire crew of cafeteria and playground aides, but officials said many would be rehired. The cuts represent $4.5 million in savings need3d to partly offset $7.1 million deficit. The shortfall was disclosed on March 20 [2025] when the budget was introduced.
..... The school board approved the spending plan after a public hearing in the municipal courtroom, which was filled to capacity with parents, students and members of the teachers' union. Trustees were distraught about having to consider the cuts, but they told the audience that they were bound by a state-imposed 3% tax levy cap.
..... The tax impact of the budget for an average homeower, with property assessed at $231,227, will be an annual increase of $282.96.
