The Garden State is home to two types of cicadas: annual and periodical. annual cicadas emerge every year and periodical cicadas emerge every 13 or 17 years, coming together to form a piercing chorus in the treetops.
..... While New Jerseyans may have been spared from last year's once-in-a-lifetime emergence, members of the 17-year Brood XIV are expected to return in New Jersey this spring. [2025] according to Gene Krisky, a professor and retired dean of behavioral and natal science at Mount St. Joseph University. Krisky is also the founder of Cicada Safari, a free app that allows the public to track and help map the emergence of periodical cicadas.

In January, Kristky told NorthJersey.com that members of Brood XIV will likely stat to emerge in the middle of May when the soil temperature reaches 64 degrees. the entire emergence will run its course over a period of six full weeks with individual cicadas coming out over a two-week period and staying out for about a month.

New Jersey residents can likely expect to see cicada in the northeast corner of the state around Bergen County, the central part of the state around Mercer County and down south in Cape May County, according to a Cicada Safari map that shows where Brood XIV has emerged in the past.

..... To track and map the emergence of periodical cicadas, Kritisky, working with the Center for IT engagement at Mount St, Josephs University, founded Cicada Safari. This free app allows the public to go on their own "cicada Safari" reporting their sightings to help map the distribution of periodical cicada emergences. To submit your cicada sighting, download the app from the Apple store or Google play. though the app, you can send in photographs of cicadas along with the date, time longitude and latitude of the sighting. After the photos are verified, they will be posted to a live map where users can track the emergence.
..... when Brood X, New Jersey's other periodical brood of cicadas, emerged in 2021, Cicada Safari received more than 561,000 photographs, according to Kritsky, who said. "When I analyzed the data, I was able to, because of the GPS coordinates, I could separate how many were unique spaces at least a football apart ... we developed one of the most detailed maps of Brood X in history."
