Yankee Candle announces store closures and layoffs

..... The parent company of Rubbermaid food containers and outdoor storage, Sharpie and Yankee Candle announced on December 1 [2025] that it would lay off 900 people from its global workforce and close 20 candle stores across the U.S., making it the latest company to announce job cuts.
..... Yankee Candle has 12 stores across New Jersey, but it;s not immediate clear which of the stores across the U.S. and Canada will be closed.
..... According to the announcement by Yankee Candle owner Newell Brands, the closures will take effect in January [2026] and make up 10% of its workforce, primarily professional and clerical staff.
..... "This productivity plan is about taking the next, disciplined step to enhance efficiency, sharpen our strategic focus, and deliver stroker, more consistent performance," Newell CEO Chris Peterson said in a statement.
..... The closures will cost between 475 million and $90 million because of severance and other such costs, according to the company, which estimated that it will save Newell between $110 million and $130 million.
..... These are 12 locations across New Jersey, according to the Yankee Candle website. it is not clear which, inf any, of these New Jersey location's would be impacted by the closures.

..... Yankee Candle suffered form a cutback in consumer discretionary spending for goods like candles, said Neil Saunders, a retail analyst and managing director of GlobalData, a market intelligence and analytics company.

Although shoppers spent a record $11.8 billion Online for Black Friday - according to data from Adobe analytics, which tracks Online shoppers retail visits - research firm CivicScience found that 38% of those shoppers relied on shortterm loan services through by now, pay later apps like Klarna.
..... Saunders said that for Yankee Candle there is also competition from larger-scale rivals like Bath & Body works, he added, "plus smaller Online brands."
..... "It's prudent for Yankee to ditch shops that no longer work so they don't act as a drag on finances," eh said.

Layoff announcements continue
