Dates to remember for November's midterm elections

..... Even though it's not a [presidential election year, much of the attention will still be on federal races as the House of Representatives and Senate feature heavily on ballots.
..... In New Jersey, in addition to town, county and school board races throughout the state, all 12 members of the House and one senator will be on the ballot.
..... But when is the election, and what do people need to know to get ready?
..... Here's a list of a few of the important dates for anyone keeping track at home.

Vote by mail

..... Vote-by-mail ballots are the first step in this election, and they'll be sent out on September 19. [2026]
..... Anyone who hasn't applied for a mail-in ballot but wants to has until October27 [2026] to do so by mail and November 2 at 3:00 PM. to do so in person.
..... Appropriately postmarked mail-in ballots are eligible as long as they are received by November 9. [2026]

Registration deadline

..... The deadline to register to vote in order to participate in the general election this fall is October 13. [2026]

Early in-person voting

..... Sample ballots will go out on October 21, [2026] and then early in-person voting starts on October 24 [2026] and run through November 1. [2026]
..... That takes place at designated early voting locations throughout each county. They'll be open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM. and Sunday from 10 AM. to 6 PM.

Election day

..... Election day is November 3. [2026] That's the deadline to submit mail-in ballots in an authorized drop box or for them to be postmarked by the United States Postal Service, Polls will be open for in-person voting form 6 AM. to 8 PM.
