..... Tesla is recalling more than 10,000 batteries designed for storing energy or use in homes after multiple reports of fires, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
..... Roughly 10,500 units of certain Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems are subject to the recall, according to the CPSC, due to significant fire and burn hazards and risk of serious injury or death.
..... According to the recall initiated on November 13, [2025] the lithium-ion battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems can cause the unit to stop functioning, during normal use, resulting in overheating that can cause smoke or a fire.
..... Tesla has received 22 reports of the batteries overheating, including six reports of smoking and five reports of fire, "resulting in minor property damage." No injuries have been reported, according to the CPSC.
..... A similar recall was initiated in Australia in September [2025] after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission was informed of Power wall 2 units "smoking or emitting flames, resulting in minor property damage."
..... The Powerwall batteries are a backup source to power homes, working with Tesla's solar rooftop products to collect and store energy for later sue in conditions like blackouts.
..... In a separate notice on tis website, Tesla attributed the issue to a "third-party battery cell defect" but did not name the third-party manufacturer. The recall issue only affects some Powerwall 2 customers and does not affect any Powerwall 3 products, it said.
..... Affected units were sold at Tesla.com/powerwall and through certified Tesla installers nationwide from November 2020 through December 2022 for about $8,000, according to the CPSC notice.
..... To check if a Powerwall 2 system is part of the recall, owners should open their Tesla to it check for an official message. Tesla has remotely discharged or removed energy form "most" affected units, the company said. Users with affected batteries will see a message in the Tesla app saying their Powerwall has been disabled and will be replaced.
..... "Your Poweerwall 2 is part of a subset of units that may contain a third-party cell defect,' the notice says.
..... "Your unit has been or is being discharged.
..... "Tesla will replace it at no cost, and our team or a Certified Installer, will contact you to schedule service.
..... The certified installer who originally installed the battery system should be the first point of contact for the replacement process, Tesla said.
..... Customers can also contact Tesla Support by email at powerwallsupportna@tesla.com or by phone at 877-961-7652.
..... Solar generation will continue while the batteries are discharged, but backup power will be temporary unavailable until the replacement is installed, according to Tesla.
